Age discrimination can be obvious, such as when a company fires or demotes an older worker in favor of a younger worker and explicitly says so. But often, it is disguised. Comments, jokes, or insults regarding one’s age, a loss of promotion, hiring only younger workers, unequal pay, unjust disciplinary action, and advertising specifically geared towards younger workers, are all signs that you may be experiencing age discrimination.
Federal and some state/local laws prohibit employment discrimination on the basis of age, such as when a person receives unfair treatment due to their age as an employee or as a job applicant. Federal law protects persons 40 years of age or older, but some state/local laws also protect younger employees.
