An employment class or collective action lawsuit involves a large group of people who have suffered similar kinds of harm from their employers. Whether it’s black employees who have experienced discrimination from their supervisors or workers who didn’t receive overtime pay, a class of people join together to hold their employer accountable.
A class and collective action is a type of lawsuit where one or several people sue on behalf of a group of people, usually referred to as the class or the collective. These lawsuits generally include an issue that is common to all members, such as race or gender discrimination or wage and hour violations.
When an employee or a group of employees share a common complaint against their employer, they may file a class- or collective-action lawsuit against that organization. That mechanism allows the courts to manage a number of similar claims more efficiently as well as give plaintiffs who may not have pursued a claim before a chance to have their voice heard.
